Duties:
The University of Iowa (UI) invites applications and nominations for the position of University Librarian. Located in America?s only UNESCO City of Literature and home of the world-renowned International Writing Program and Iowa Writers' Workshop, the UI is committed to the continued excellence of a library that is the heart of a dynamic and diverse university.

Responsibilities

The University Librarian (UL) provides creative, visionary and strategic leadership of the University Libraries during a time of exciting and dynamic changes in the field. The UL is an advocate for the role of the librarian at a leading research university; a person whose vision and character inspires continued excellence and innovative new efforts, and will demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting inclusiveness and cultural pluralism. The UL will encourage user-focused services; develop partnerships on and off campus; create strategic planning and assessment tools; participate in external fundraising; collaborate with other libraries; engage in strategic national initiatives and state and federal legislative issues; and oversee a $24.1 million budget. The UL reports to the Executive Vice President and Provost and regularly participates in meetings of the Council of Deans.

The University of Iowa Libraries

The UI Libraries is one of the largest libraries in the United States, comprised of the Main Library, Hardin Library for the Health Sciences, five branch libraries (Art, Sciences, Business, Engineering and Music), and an off-site storage facility. The 161 talented staff provide the information vital to the University?s missions of learning, research, engagement and clinical care. Physical holdings include more than five million volumes, with deep and extensive rare books, manuscripts, archives and time-based media collections. The UI Libraries provides access to a broad range of digital content, including journals, e-books, abstracts and indexes and datasets. Additionally, tens of thousands of digital items are created and collected by the Libraries and made available through the Iowa Digital Library and Iowa Research Online. The UI Libraries is a member of Association for Research Libraries (ARL), the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), OCLC, and the Hathi Trust. The Libraries serves a Regional Federal Depository Library and as an Outreach Library for the National Library of Medicine. An exciting new project is underway to convert 37,000 sq. ft. of the first floor of the Main Library into a Learning Commons. This joint effort between the Office of the Provost, Information Technology Services and UI Libraries provides flexible individual and group study space, innovative services and support, a rich technology environment and a caf?.
